Dapper needs an update

Posted in Ubuntu by Jerome on April 10, 2007

A fresh install of Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS desktop will require 216MB of updates from main alone…perhaps its time to have a new update of the CD just in time for the 1st year anniversary of Dapper.

    Indeed, I agree…

    6.06.2 is overdue!

6.06.1 came in August. This is of course because some issues with the installer on the original release.

But now, upgrading 250 MB seems like way too much, specially in non broadband parts of the world (imagine downloading that on a 28.8kb ppp modem connection ??!!)

It would be great to get a 6.06.2 as soon as possible. Is it really that hard to make it happen?

A schedule/roadmap should be implemented as well for 6.06.3 and evt 6.06.4 (thinking of the 5 year server support)

    Just thinking…

    I agreed with this.

While 6.06 takes a lot of punches from the newer releases (and that’s good), it should updated.

250MB is a lot, and I assume that’s only with the default repositories (no backports, multiverse, etc)!

hubuntu: well making an update for 6.06 is not complicated but it is manpower intensive (testing images, etc.). Updates to Dapper should be similar to how Debian updates their releases, for example, Sarge is now at Update 6, just after Etch was released.

tiago: if we consider “real” LTS, we should only consider Main and not so much with Universe, although it would be preferable as well.

please keep this into mind as well.

Such an update should be combined with new kernels with a lot of backported drivers and bugfixes.

dapper is frequently unusable on new hardware because of missing drivers. Please keep it Long Term Useful as well. :)
