What’s Cool, and what’s Uncool

Posted in Ubuntu by Jerome on May 1, 2007

Cool: Ubuntu 7.04 is bound to be supported by Dell, pre-loaded or not.

Uncool: Someone who has access to the Planet Ubuntu server decided to remove people who blogged about the whole Ubuntu – Dell thing. If its not bound to happen, why remove them without any notice? Thumbs down on this one. Giving a gag order to someone employed by Canonical is understandable, but giving the smack down to community is another story.

What’s even more lame is that the post you link to above was linked to by Boing Boing. So, there’s 20k Unique visitors an hour for about 8 hours that won’t know what the hell is going on.

What a great message to send to people.

it’s interesting to note that my blog entry
about that rumour (it was still one at the time) wasn’t removed, and was the 2nd entry on planet for the many hours while it
wasn’t updated during that “lock down” period. That whole planet story disturb me a bit….

Daniel, yeah a couple of us talked about your earlier blog entry. It’s probably because the “rumour” part is more visible and written as a question rather than a “confirmation” compared to what some of us wrote. It’s a funny situation where capitalism has prevailed and shows that the project sponsor is moving upward in terms of business. How this affects community participation is yet to be seen.

    Canonical censura Planet Ubuntu…

I wonder if it’s the same person who removed Ian Murdock’s blog from Planet Debian one day?

Ah no..from what I know, keybuk doesn’t handle the servers even. There’s going to be a spec to make sure things are well defined and what actions should be taken next time. The spec is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PlanetUbuntuEditorialPolicy

But as keybuk mentioned in the link above, business partners of Canonical won’t see the artificial distinctions between URLs.
